Well first lets look at the definitions of the Hebrew words used for soul and spirit in the Old Testament. *

The Hebrew word for Soul is nephesh, which means literally ''life''.
This Hebrew word is also used for animals in Genesis 1:20-24, and for man as a whole person in Joshua 2:13 and Exodus 21:23. *

We know there is a difference between the Soul - psyche - and the Spirit - pneuma - thanks to Hebrews 4:12 in the Bible:
The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. *

God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. *

Animals have a soul and a body. They can relate to themselves and to humans.
Man has a soul, a body, and a spirit with which he relates to God. *
