What is the difference between soul and spirit? Are they the same thing? *

Well first lets look at the definitions of the Hebrew words used for soul and spirit in the Old Testament. *

The Hebrew word for Soul is nephesh, which means literally ''life''.

This Hebrew word is also used for animals in Genesis 1:20-24, and for man as a whole person in Joshua 2:13 and Exodus 21:23. *

.The Hebrew word for Spirit is ruach, and it refers only to the immaterial part of man. *

Greek, the language that the original New Testament texts were written in, makes things a little clearer. *

We know there is a difference between the Soul - psyche - and the Spirit - pneuma - thanks to Hebrews 4:12 in the Bible:

The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. *

..The spirit is the immaterial part of man. Man is not a spirit, man has a spirit. *

,The soul (psyche) is just what the Greek word implies - it is the makeup, the life of the man.

You are different from every other person. The thing that makes you you is your soul. *

With your soul you relate to others and understand yourself. Your spirit is how you relate to God. *

Your spirit is part of your soul, much like your mind is part of your soul, and all is clothed in your physical body. But it is your soul that makes you who you are. *

But your spirit is how you relate to God. When you are born again, you are born of spirit (John 3:5-6) and are able to discern spiritual things, and to hear the voice of God, and to worship God in spirit and in truth. *

John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.
God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

OK now pay attention folks:

Plants have a body only. They cannot and do not relate to anything else.

Animals have a soul and a body. They can relate to themselves and to humans.

Man has a soul, a body, and a spirit with which he relates to God. *

When we die, our bodies stay behind but our soul and spirit moves on - and therefore we will be recognizable as Nick and Gary at the coming resurrection (Matthew 17:3). You will receive a new body, but you will still be you. *

see 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 *
